    Histry of Arabia cotton

The Greeks and the Arabs were not acquainted with cotton until the Wars of Alexander the Great, as his contemporary Megasthenes disclosed to Seleucus I Nicator of "there being trees on which fleece develops" in "Indica".[citation needed] This might be a reference to "tree cotton", Gossypium arboreum, which is a local of the Indian subcontinent.

As indicated by the Columbia Encyclopedia:[9]

Cotton has been spun, woven, and colored since ancient circumstances. It dressed the general population of old India, Egypt, and China. Many years previously the Christian period, cotton materials were woven in India with incomparable expertise, and their utilization spread to the Mediterranean nations.
